Description of The coast of Dalmatia | Self-Guided Bike Tour

Bike through and discover Split, alongside the islands of Brač, Šolta, Hvar, and Korčula, the Pelješac peninsula, and the city of Dubrovnik!

Your cycling adventure begins in Split, a city established by Roman Emperor Diocletian around 300 A.D., as you traverse the Croatian coastline.  Visit Brač, Croatia’s third largest island and the highest in the Adriatic Sea.

Brač is renowned for its valuable limestone, which was utilized in the construction of Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the White House in Washington, D.C. Explore stone quarries, stone masons, traditional villages, and wine cellars.  Ride along the serene and rural roads of Šolta Island.

Here, you will immerse yourself in a bygone era, as there are no large hotels or modern developments… just authentic traditional life…  Next, continue cycling through historical villages and along the coastal paths of Hvar Island, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stari Grad, and ride through lavender fields to arrive at Hvar town.

Cycle through the less-traveled paths of Korčula Island and indulge in delicious homemade dishes, enjoying Grk and Postup wines on the side. Savor oysters and delightful seafood risotto in Ston, located on the Pelješac peninsula, where you can explore ancient saltworks and one of Europe’s longest city walls.  Conclude your trip with an evening in Dubrovnik – the Pearl of the Adriatic!

Bike Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Split

Welcome in Dalmatia!

When you arrive in Split, you will meet with our representative who will introduce you to the area, highlighting key sites and dining spots. You will have your bike adjusted to fit you and receive a briefing on the various bike routes and options available.

The primary attraction in Split is Diocletian’s Palace, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Locals continue to inhabit residences that are integrated into the ancient walls of the Palace. Inside the walls, you will find many cafes and restaurants offering fresh Mediterranean cuisine! You can also enjoy leisurely evening strolls along the beautiful waterfront promenade located in front of the Palace.

Depending on your time of arrival, you have the option of a relaxing, car-free 20 km bike ride or a more challenging 80 km loop into the inland region.

Day 2: Island Šolta

After enjoying your morning coffee at the waterfront promenade in Split, you will embark on a ferry ride to Šolta, your first island in Dalmatia, lasting one hour. Explore and cycle around the island of Šolta, primarily along narrow back roads that lead through small villages in the island’s interior, where you will visit several coastal towns. Pedal through scenery filled with olive groves and vineyards. There is an option to visit a honey production site. You’ll spend the evening back in Split.

Meals: Breakfast
Distance biked: 40 km
Overnight: Split

Day 3: Island Brač

Today you set off for Brač Island, the largest and tallest of all the central Dalmatian islands, offering you numerous cycling options. You can choose from scenic coastal routes, ascents reaching 778 meters, and rides through coastal or rural villages and towns, exploring art galleries, enjoying local dining, visiting stone mason workshops, or even touring the stone mason school. No matter what you decide, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the mainland while cycling through olive groves and vineyards!

Day 4: Island Hvar

Following the ferry trip from Split to Hvar, we recommend a leisurely morning cycling tour around the UNESCO-listed site of Stari Grad. Stari Grad (Old Town) is an ancient Greek settlement that dates back to 400 B.C. In addition to historical landmarks, you’ll encounter serene, picturesque towns and pathways where you can cycle through stunning gardens, along the coast, and amongst olive groves. For the afternoon bike ride, traverse the well-known and arguably most scenic route that leads through lavender fields to the town of Hvar.

Meals: Breakfast
Distance biked: 45 km  –  Short option: 20 km
Overnight: Hvar town

Day 5: Island Korčula

Following the boat transfer, begin your cycling adventure on the island of Korčula, located approximately 46 kilometers from the town of the same name. The island has a rich history of settlement, dating back to before the Greek period! Throughout its past, the Venetians selected the northern coastline of the island to construct a fortified city, which played a significant role in their influence in the region. Due to their efforts, we now have the stunning walled old town of Korčula, which has remained remarkably well-preserved and architecturally unspoiled for centuries; this will be your residence for the next two nights. Take in the picturesque southern coastline of the island, featuring breathtaking views of secluded beaches and coves, ride through charming villages and small settlements, and take breaks at some of the excellent local konoba (taverns) to savor delicious dishes prepared in the region!

Meals: Breakfast
Distance biked: 46 km  –  Long option: 55 km
Overnight: Korčula town

Day 6: Loop ride Korčula

While you spend another day in Korčula, seize the opportunity to discover the island’s hidden bays, charming historical towns, distinctive small villages, and dense pine forests that blanket the area. There are several loop routes available for you today. Whichever you select, you’ll journey past vineyards, olive orchards, and along the stunning coastline of the island. Savor traditional dishes such as homemade gnocchi, homemade macaroni, pastičada, and other meals that have been lovingly prepared by local families for generations. This island is also renowned for producing some of the finest Croatian white wines, which will enhance your lunch or dinner experience. And let’s not forget, Marco Polo began his adventurous journey from Korčula.

Meals: Breakfast
Distance biked: 36 km  –  Short option: 24 km  –  Long option: 85 km
Overnight:  Korčula town

Day 7: Pelješac peninsula and Dubrovnik

Today, for your last biking adventure, you will ride along the stunning Pelješac peninsula, navigating through the vineyards of Dingač and Postup, which are cultivated from Plavac Mali grapes, closely related to California’s Zinfandel and Primitivo from Calabria. There are numerous wineries you can explore during your journey. Take in the magnificent views offered by Pelješac, with the islands of Mljet and Korčula on your right and the mainland on your left. Today’s ride features a few hills, picturesque vineyard paths, and beautiful coastal stretches… Your final cycling destination is Ston, where you will be transported to Dubrovnik. Ston, a salt-producing town located on the Pelješac peninsula, was established in the 14th century and boasts the longest fortified walls in Europe, measuring 5.5 km. This town played a significant role for the Dubrovnik Republic, which thrived in the 14th century, and you’re about to witness its historical significance.

Meals: Breakfast
Distance biked: 32 km  –  Short option: 14 km  –  Long option: 60 km

Today after breakfast the tour ends.

You might want to extend your stay in Dubrovnik and explore the historical sites along the magnificent walls that surround the old town!
