Description of Sailing and Cycling the Tuscan Islands | Guided E-Bike and Boat Tour

There is a lot to anticipate on this adventure through Tuscany, where you will ride along the paths of the Etruscans and savor the Italian ‘dolce vita’.

The typical Tuscan scenery features rolling hills embellished with cypress trees, vineyards, and olive groves. Charming medieval towns with narrow cobblestone streets and vibrant houses beckon inquisitive travelers to discover. Sandy shores and hidden coves provide chances for a swim in the sparkling water.

With the Atlantis as our home on the water for the week, you can experience a carefree journey as we sail from one location to the next. The ship’s expansive sails create a genuine seafaring atmosphere.

Please bear in mind: The itinerary is largely influenced by wind conditions. Consequently, all ports and anchor points must be adjusted according to the weather during each trip. We kindly request your understanding and adaptability concerning the tour schedule.

Bike Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome In Tuscany!

You will arrive individually in Porto St. Stefano, a charming and bustling port town located on the northern side of the Monte Argentario peninsula. Boarding the boat begins at 6 pm. If you arrive earlier, you’re welcome to drop off your luggage on board starting from 2 pm. A brief walk through the quaint medieval old town, adorned in shades of pink and beige, will quickly remind you that your vacation has begun! We suggest taking a stroll to the Fortezza Spagnola, perched on the hill above the old town, which was constructed in the 17th century for the city’s defense. The first dinner on board offers a wonderful opportunity to meet your fellow travelers, guides, and crew. You will spend the night in Porto St. Stefano.

Day 2: Monte Argentario and Talamone

Our inaugural bike tour begins in Porto St. Stefano and leads us to the historic town of Orbetello. With a bit of luck, we might get the opportunity to see the stunning flamboyance of flamingos in the WWF natural oasis Laguna di Orbetello. Following that, our cycling journey takes us to the remnants of the fortified Roman settlement of Cosa and then through the Duna Feniglia nature reserve, featuring its breathtaking pine forest. The adventure proceeds mostly along cycling paths back to Porto Santo Stefano, where the Atlantis is ready to take us across to Talamone.

Mileage: aprx. 25 mi./40 km, 660 ft./200 m of elevation

Day 3: Talamone and Porto Azzurro

After breakfast, it’s time for a sailing voyage! A long crossing to Elba awaits us. If the winds are favourable, guests receive a briefing on sailing and can help set sail together. After Sicily and Sardinia, Elba is the third largest island in Italy and it impresses with its charm, lush nature and rich history. Lunch will be served on board and guests have time for a swim before we arrive in the sheltered bay of Porto Azzuro. In the evening, you can explore the charming harbour town.

Day 4: Porto Azzuro, Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro

Our excursion today explores the diverse island of Elba, leading us to the vibrant town of Capoliveri, where we relish the Italian ambiance and indulge in some tasty ice cream and coffee. We then proceed along a stunning scenic route, followed by a lunch pause, before making our way back to Porto Azurro. Later in the evening, we embark on an island-hopping adventure that includes a wine tasting experience.

Mileage: aprx. 17 mi./27 km, 1,325 ft./400 m of elevation

Day 5: Porto Azzuro and Enfola Bay

Today, we’re ready for a longer ride from Porto Azzuro heading north on the island of Elba. Following a coffee break in Rio nell’ Elba, we will make our way to one of the trip’s most stunning viewpoints. From Voltereio, we’ll be treated to vistas of the lovely bay of Portoferreio, the island’s capital. After we finish lunch, we’ll cycle the final few kilometers to Enfola Bay.

Mileage: aprx. 25 mi./40 km, 1,970 ft./600 m of elevation

Day 6: Marciana Marina and Marina di Campo

Today, we await the queen’s stage! We bike across the island, stopping at the mountain village of Marciana before arriving at the highest point on our route, Monte Perone. From this vantage point, we are rewarded with a delightful descent to the village of San Piero in Campo, where we can savor a tasty lunch with a view of our ship. After returning to the ship, there is ample time for a refreshing swim directly from the vessel. Subsequently, the sails are unfurled, and we set off for Isola Giglio, an island situated in the southern part of the Tuscan Archipelago. This Italian gem features mountains, forests, pristine nature, and crystal-clear waters!

Mileage: aprx. 19 mi./30 km, 2,300 ft./700 m of elevation

Day 7: Island Giglio and Porto St. Stefano

We start our cycling adventure in Campese, situated on the western side of the island. Our goal for today is the historic town of Giglio Castello, perched like a fortified fortress at a high elevation on the island of Giglio. A swift descent leads us down to Giglio Porto. Following dinner, we prepare to set sail for the island of Giglio. Isola Giglio, located at the southernmost part of the Tuscan archipelago, is a picturesque gem.

Mileage: aprx. 9.4 mi./15 km, 1,650 ft./500 m of elevation

Day 8: Arrivederci!

Disembarkation day. Leave at 9 am after breakfast, followed by either a longer stay in Tuscany or a personal trip home.

Itinerary changes

We reserve the right to make changes to the planned route due to changing wind and weather conditions, and where required by organizational necessities. Our tours are dependent on weather conditions and the final decision is that of the captain. You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend time on board the boat, instead of taking a planned bike-tour.

Tallship – Three-masted barque ATLANTIS

Veliero AtlantisAt 57 x 7.5 m and with 14 sails the Atlantis is an eye catcher in any harbour. Built in 1905 and christened Elbe 2, the Atlantis served faithfully as a light vessel in the North Sea, Germany. In 2005, she was renovated as a tall ship for passenger cruises. The renovation features a classy salon, a spacious upper deck with seats and a cocktail bar as well as 17 comfortable, air-conditioned guest cabins with a shower and WC.

Special features at harbours and while dropping anchor

Our tall ship is too large to dock in many of the small fishing harbours we visit and therefore spends most nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy must be used to get to land. Surefootedness, balance, and a certain degree of agility are therefore required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides are always happy to lend a helping hand. It is also important to remember that in general, wind, swell, and tidal changes have significant influences on tours by tall ship.

Catering on board: This tour has half-board catering. Due to the differing daily programs, some days will include no warm meals while others will include both lunch and dinner on board. Breakfast is available on board every day.
