Sardinia Blue Zone

You'll start in the beautiful scenery of the village of Oliena, just in the footsteps of Supramonte. From here you’ll hike to the secluded village of Tiscali and along the coast arriving at the magical cove of Cala Luna. The Gennargentu range, the highest of Sardinia, is just a few km away, so we’ll drive over the mountains arriving at the heart of the island in Aritzo. Oaks, chestnuts and walnuts trees and free flocks of cows and sheep design a peaceful scenery, very diverse from the jet set along the coast. You’ll finish at the peaceful village of Santa Maria Navarrese, hiking until the imposing cliff of Perdalonga, right at the end of the Gulf of Orosei.

Tour Map

Day 1: Benvenuti in Sardegna!

Shuttle to hotel, brief with guide and relax

Upon arrival, you'll meet us at the airport and we'll shuttle to the Agriturismo in Oliena. It’s definitely one of our favourites agriturismo in Sardegna, we’ll taste their own extra virgin olive oil, their simple and tasty Cannonau wine, and their locally produced food. So nice! Here we’ll have a small brief about the week, with an aperitif under the scenery of majestic Punta Corrasi. Then you’ll have the rest of the afternoon to chill in the Agriturismo, or going on your first promenade to the spring of Su Gologone.

Overnight: Oliena
Included: Dinner

Day 2: The Mysterious village of Tiscali

At the heart of archaic Sardinia

Today’s hike takes you through the deep valley of Lanaitto to discover the enigmatic Bronze Age settlement of Tiscali, accessible only by foot. After half an hour of jeep, you’ll start walking from the bridge of Sa Barva, which will enchant you immediately the high limestone wall that runs over the river Flumineddu. The stony path begins to climb before going through the shady forest of oaks. The last climb takes us at the magnificence of the archaeological site of Tiscali, whose ruins emerge inside a limestone cave collapsed. After the excursion we’ll have a lunch with the shepherds, that will cook for us a tasty lunch using their own products in the peace of this majestic oak forest.

Overnight: Oliena
Included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 3: Cala Luna hike

The beauty of Orosei gulf and the Nuraghe Mannu

After visiting Northern Sardinia coastline and islands, we could think that we've seen already the most beautiful beaches of the world. It's just because you haven't seen yet the Gulf of Orosei. Then you could say you discovered, for sure, some of the most beautiful coves of the whole world. With a nice drive across the Cedrino river valley, we'll get to the village of Dorgali, and from here the views will open up over the ocean and down to the coastal village of Cala Gonone, nestled at the bottom of the limestone mountain of Supramonte. From here, we’ll drive to the area of “Buchi Arta”, to admire some of the old shepherds huts of the area. Here we’ll visit as well the scenic Nuraghe Mannu, overlooking the whole gulf. Then we’ll walk all the way to Cala Luna, probably the most beautiful beach of the gulf, created by the Codula Ilune creek, surrounded by hundreds of colorful Oleander trees.

Overnight: Oliena
Included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 4: Traditional Masks, Murals and Cannonau wine

The ancient carnival of Sardinia and the great Cannonau

Barbagia is the home of a fierce, proud, yet hospitable people. We’ll have a cultural day visiting Orgosolo, the village of Murales, with its quite proud history to be discovered about through the murals that covers the walls of its houses, and Mamoiada, the village of Cannonau, the wine that makes us living to 100 years old. After a wine tasting and a light lunch at the Cantina Sedilesu winery, with our friends Emilio and Francesco we can visit the Museo delle Maschere (Carnival Mask Museum).

On the way back we’ll travel to the hotel through Cannonau vineyards and olive groves passing pastures dotted by flocks of sheeps. Our final destination is the comfortable Hotel Sa Muvara, nestled in the mountains of Aritzo.

Overnight: Aritzo
Included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 5: The inner Sardinia

Vast forests of Oaks, Chestnuts, Walnuts , and mushrooms picking!

With our local guide we’ll explore the most popular hiking area of Aritzo, the Funtana Cungiada trail, taking us up to 1500 metres above sea level. During our hike we’ll pass under a forest of majestic trees, spending some time to find the delicious local mushrooms: Porcini, Cardoncello, Drumsticks and the most precious Ovulo. Well, it’s not a promise, but thanks to the rainy season we’ve just had we are pretty sure we’ll find plenty of mushrooms.

Overnight: Aritzo
Included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 6: Fonni and the top of Gennargentu

The Gennargentu range, the “Silver door” of the island

Today we drive until Fonni, a fascinating village and the highest of Sardinia.

According to the weather we can climb even to the very top of the Island until Punta Lamarmora, with almost 6000 thousand feets of elevation. On the way to the coast we’ll cross the whole Ogliastra region, one of the blue zones of the world, a place where people lives till 100 years old and more. You’ll be amazed by a very diverse landscape, made out of rugged mountains that shaped very fierce people. Even the coast is dominated by those imposing mountains, an incredible scenery.

Overnight: Santa Maria Navarrese
Included: Breakfast Lunch

Day 7: Hike to Perdalonga

Last beautiful hike along the coast

Today we’ll have our last glorious hike to Perdalonga (the long stone), right at the southern cape of Supramonte range. It’s a perfect coastal hike, giving us the feeling of being on some tropical wild island, thanks to the luscious vegetation. The arrival point is just spectacular, and most important there’s a great family owned restaurant just under the cliff, a perfect spot to celebrate our last day (for now!) in Sardinia.

Overnight: Santa Maria Navarrese
Included: Breakfast Dinner

Day 8: Good bye!

Shuttle to airport

In a couple of hours shuttle we’ll take you back to the airport.
We are sure you loved Sardinia, and we were sure that you would have been back...and you did 🙂

Ciao amici, alla prossima!

Mediterras supported 8 of us on the cycling Gran Tour down the west coast. I would strongly recommend them - brilliant support, great local knowledge led routes and excellent bikes, We would use them again without hesitation.

We just finished a custom tour with Mediterras, from Palermo to Marsala. What a fantastic experience! Our guide Gian Mario was so knowledgeable and attentive, his planning was meticulous. The choice of boutique hotels, as well as the restaurants he selected, were all wonderful. The rides were well planned, taking us through beautiful countryside and along spectacular coasts. Our van driver Giovanni was also awesome, he could be a professional naturalist. We are already planning our next trip with them (to Sardinia). What a treat to use a small local company that gave us such a memorable trip!

We loved traveling with Mediterrras!Mario and Giovanni were amazing, professional, detailed and thoughtful. They made planning this trip easy, they were super flexible when we had to change plans. They supplied us with excellent equipment (I loved my road bike), detailed maps, fun rides, history lessons, in fact we laughed our way around Sicily! We enjoyed our meals together and they booked us into beautiful hotels. Unfortunately, one member of our group had a medical emergency, they looked after him like they would a family member.I can’t wait to bike again with our new best friends!Go ahead book these local guys, you’re guaranteed a fabulous experience!Bernadette (Irish woman living and biking in Seattle).

Great planning, exceptional guides. We enjoyed everything about our trip. We learned a great deal about the history and culture of Sardinia. Marcello at Mediterras made sure that everything was properly arranged and made adjustments when necessary. A great part of our enjoyment came from our interaction with our guides (Giovanni, Stefano and Danilo). They were all very knowledgeable and friendly. When it came time to part we felt like we were leaving old friends.

We did the "big-loop" from the 20.08.2022.The big loop ist 12 days road bike around the island. We have booked the trip 1.5 weeks before (last minute) and everything has been organised perfectly. We had an extra break day every 4 days biking. And was great.Mediterras has answer to all our questions. On the day of departure, our bikes we ready, we got time to get full explanation of the tour. We got a navigation system with all the routes. Everything was very clear and very well organised. Our lugage was every evening delivered at the next hotels. The hotel has been wonderfully selected, and always at some nice location and not too far away from the center or the beach. Thank again to Mediterras team for the wonderful holidays.I would give more than a 5 Stars for this trip and the wonderful team.Doris & Jean-Luc - from Swizerland

A fantastic introduction to cycling in Sardinia. I just rented the bike in Cagliari for a few days at the end of my holiday, with no particular routes in mind. Gian Mario kindly suggested two nice challenging routes, and sent the GPX files. I only had time for one of them - but it was an absolute gem. Starting in the city, cycling along Poetto, before turning towards the hills. After one tiny village, I didn't pass another café or shop for 40 or 50 km. Just me and the pain in my legs. Superb. The bike was a gem - a former Lotto Jumbo team bike which was ridden in the Paris Roubaix by Tom Leezer. I was a *bit* slower, but I probably enjoyed it more! Wonderful experience - lovely people - always available on whatsapp if I needed anything, which was very reassuring when I don't speak Italian or Sardu! I will definitely use them again if/when I return to Sardegna. Thanks again!
We did the Sicily Baroque tour with Mediterras. Self guided on bikes (el and manual). Gian and his team did adapt the tour for our needs and did all to make the tour enjoyable. Few problems surfaced but all were solved. The trail was interesting and added a lot to our understanding of Sicily, its landscape and life in the rural areas. Accommodations were all good, and the quality of the food in the restaurants Gian had arranged varied from good to excellent. At the end of our tour we did a walk in the hillsides of Etna arranged by Mediterras. The Etna tour was wonderful. We were lucky with weather given the circumstances. It was a bit foggy and a bit cold, but it did not rain. The guides did a good job of explaining the geology of Etna for us and the two geology-educated persons in the group! The hike was challenging, which suited the group well. The food and wine at Barbaras place was totally excellent! Six stars out of five.We were not as lucky in Taormina! It did rain cats and dogs. The drivers did adapt quite well. Did stop at several foto-ops and at the entry gate to the pedestrian street. We did wander through the Greek theatre and the pedestrian walk, did have a stop at a fancy coffe-shop/bar and then decided to skip the dinner and return early back to Syracusa.

I found this company using google and right away Gian was very responsive. I told them what we were looking for, gave specific parameters for distance and elevation, and they put together an itinerary very quickly that completely matched what I asked for. The entire trip was seamless from the 1am pickup at airport to drop off after 10 days of cycling. The routes were on quiet wonderful roads and the hotels they chose were all great. A really good local company which does what they claim to do very well. Highly recommend.

Mediterras arranged a self guided cycling trip through South Eastern sicily stopping in beautiful baroque towns. They arranged everything with less than a weeks notice, keeping us up to date on accommodation, bikes equipment etc.My husband and I had a wonderful time. The ride was perfect, having both been off a bike for several months, the ride was the perfect combination of hills and flats for us to really enjoy it. The accommodation was far better than what we were expecting for the price and recommendations for dinner and stops spot on. We ate incredibly well and all the hosts in the villas and hotels very welcoming and helpful.I would certainly recommend them especially arranging it all with such little notice.
